Posted by Christopher Rudder

Jean Caffeine is an y’allternative artist with rock cred, pop hooks and country twinges. Austin Critics likened Jean to Beth Orton, Amy Rigby, Patti Smith, Liz Phair and Brenda Lee. As a singer/songwriter and band front person, Jean has kicked out the jams in more than one continent. At home in San Francisco coffee houses, Texas roadhouses and in the Foreign Press club in Phonem Phen, Cambodia, she’s played fests such as NXNE in Canada, BID in Germany and both SXSW and CMJ in the US. Geckos in the Elevator, on Joe Records, reflects on Jean's life history and her more recent travels which include a year in Bangkok, Thailand and several years in Ontario, Canada. "Jane Rearramnged" by Jean Caffeine

Ms. Caffeine, has had more lives than a cat. She drummed for 70’s San Francisco all girl band The Urge and NYC 15-minutes-of-famers Pulsallama, who were known for chanting, cardboard props, and rhythmic cacophony. Pulsallama opened for the Clash, had their picture in Interview Magazine, and got kicked off a bill with PIL ltd. Jean went on to front her own y'allternative country band, Jean Caffeine's All Nite Truckstop out of Austin, Texas in the 90s. Jean is touted as having the first SXSW day party, one of which featured R.L. Burnside playin’ on her back porch accompanied by her dog Pee Wee. Jean Caffeine is also a visual artist who works in print media and collage. She worked as an animator in Richard Linklater's "Walking Life" and also made a cameo in the movie “Slacker.”

CR: I wanna thank you for taking time out of your schedule to talk with me and Rogue Magazine’s Hearing Aid . How Are You?

Jean Caffeine: pretty good.  In Austin TX the weather has been very extreme: A summer of too much heat and now we are in a too much rain chapter if that can even be possible in TX. I need to see some sun soon!!

CR:...iiight lets do this!!! Aside from music and what is written in your bio, tell us something about you that your fans don’t know.

Jean Caffeine: I subleted Alex Chiltons treehouse style apartment in New Orleans for a few months back in the day. He mixed a record for an old girl band of mine but it never came out so that tidbit wasn't very newsworthy. Was saddened and shocked when he passed away suddenly last year.

C.R. Tell us the story behind the song you submitted for the this feature?

Jean Caffeine: This song is mostly about a guy who reappears from the past via an email  This has become quite  commonplace with Facebook but pre-Facebook it seemed very surprising and radical. The song revisits those old days and toys with the idea of updating a relationship that never really was into the present or future.
